Subject: [*] Bachman 2.0
This is a new version of my Pacman-style arcade game for the Mac,
with 3D perspective, different levels etc. The game should work on all
Macs and under all system versions, now in color when available.
This version not only adds color, but also fixes the problems with
the game demanding too much memory on some systems. As configured,
it will run with up to 256 colors, and will run even with more if
you give it more memory.
The game is $15 shareware, which gives you the registered version, which
includes the level editor, plus the latest versions of my other games.
Send cash (neatly wrapped) if possible. Most checks and money orders are
pointless since I have to pay high fees (in the order of $12) to cash them.

This is a list based on the lists of entities contained in the ISO

contains, in English and in French, the actual standard text, followed
by five lists sorted into five different orders, and two conversion

standard. While it has been checked against the standard, it may
possibly contain errors, and the standard and registration newsletters
should be verified for any critical application.

FourBar Demo 1.0 (Non-FPU)
This application does analysis and visualization of a four-bar mechanism. A
four-
bar mechanism is a closed link chain where motion is accomplished by grounding
one link in order to transfer energy from the input link to the follower.
System requirements
System 7.x with Color QuickDraw installed. (might run on earlier system)
The full version will require a FPU or a software FPU to run.
This is a demo version with certain features disabled
* Cannot copy or print a window.
* Cannot open an input file.
* Can only print linkage info ( no numerical analysis printout or display)
* "Input Data..." dialog is disabled. Cannot change parameters in it.
* Cannot hide certain links (to isolate certain motions).
* Cannot track instant centers during animation.
* Non-FPU version, i.e. SLOW. The original version is very fast.
The full version is constantly changing and more options have been added since
I
compiled this demo version.
For more information please refer to the user manual included.

REGISTRATION FEE: US $10 or UK #6 Internet: gdl@maths.ox.ac.uk
Do you think the Finder is too slow and clumsy when navigating through your
folder structure? Do you perhaps use a hierarchical Apple menu utility but
are tired of zigging and zagging your mouse from submenu to submenu? Or
maybe you just like color icons. If so, then you should try Greg's Browser.
Displaying multiple folders in a single window, Greg's Browser lets you
simultaneously see the contents of a folder, its parent, and a subfolder,
providing a quick and easy way of moving both up and down through your
folder hierarchy.
Greg's Browser requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw.
Changes since version 1.0
------------------------
o The Browser window now fits on the 9" screen of classic-style Macs.
o You can now resize the window vertically to show more files at once.
o You can now drag and drop files onto the desktop icon in the top left.
o The Browser window now updates correctly upon closing a dialog box.
o Fixed the bus error when the Browser tries to shift the file lists left.
o Fixed the bus error when accessing special AOCE volumes.
o The Browser now exits gracefully if launched on an incompatible Mac.
o Please note my new e-mail address. The previous one expires mid-October.

Greg's Buttons v3.1.2 (1 October 1993) (c)1991-93 Gregory D. Landweber
REGISTRATION FEE: US $15 or UK L10 Internet: gdl@maths.ox.ac.uk
Greg's Buttons is a control panel that lets you customize the user interface
of a Macintosh running System 7. Greg's Buttons requires that your Mac
support color, so it won't work on the Plus, SE, Classic, or PowerBook 100.
It works fine with both color and gray-scale monitors, and although it will
still work on a black and white screen, the effect will not be as impressive.
Changes since v3.1
-----------------
o Fixed the conflict with the Now Menus application substitution feature.
o Added Palatino 14 to the list of substitute system fonts. It is good for
large screens but the font is a bit to big to fit in buttons and dialogs.
o You can now register online using CompuServe.
o I have a new e-mail address. The old one expires in mid-October.
List of Features
---------------
o Replaces the standard flat black and white push buttons, check boxes,
and radio buttons with tasteful 3-D color ones. These buttons are
designed to complement the windows and scroll bars in the System 7
interface, and in particular they use the color tints that you can
select in the "Color" control panel. You can choose from two styles
of push buttons and three styles of radio buttons and check boxes.
o Lets you select the background color of dialog boxes, menus (both the
text and background colors), and Finder windows.
o Substitutes a font of your choice (chosen two versions each of Palatino
and Helvetica) for Chicago as your system font.
o Colorizes the mini icons (the smallest size that you can select in the
"Views" control panel) in Finder list views (View by Name, etc.).
o Colorizes the stop sign, caution, and note alert icons.
Notes
-----
o Please note that I fixed the conflict with Now Compress in version 3.1.
o If you notice that an application (such as America Online) continues to
use flat black and white buttons, this is NOT a bug in Greg's Buttons.
Rather, the application is probably using its own custom button routines
which look like the old flat buttons but behave slightly differently.
There is nothing I can do about applications using non-standard buttons.

This is the Think C 6.01 version of Little_C -- a subset C interpreter
by Herbert Schildt.
Little C is a C interpreter that can execute a subset of K&R ANSI C
programming language. ANSI C is a robust and powerful programming
language, but the Little C interpreter only implements a limited range
of features. These include: parameterized functions with local variables;
recursion; if statement; do-while, while, and for loops; integer and
character variables; global variables; integer, character, and string
constraints; return statement; several library functions; several
operators; functions returning integers; and comments. A recursive-descent
parser is used to implement the C interpreter. Details of the development,
coding, and functionality of the C interpreter are described in
Schildt, Herbert.

Password v1
Another fine product from Avarice Software
Password is a small utility for quickly turning on an off password
protection on the Newton. Its icon in the extras drawer indicates
whether password protection is currently turned on or off. Click on
its icon to toggle the state.
The built-in way of turning on/off password protection is somewhat
cumbersome, especially if you do it often. To turn off password
protection you use Prefs, enter your old password, and leave the
new password line blank. To turn password protection back on, you
return to Prefs and reenter your password.
Use of Password is free of charge. I encourage you to share it freely.

Known Bugs:
- If you turn on or off password protection using Prefs, Password's
icon will not reflect the new state until you tap on it. This is
because the current version of Prefs doesn't notify other apps
when it changes the system soup.
- Sometimes the icon will flicker briefly when it changes state. This
is only a cosmetic problem, it doesn't mean Password is having
trouble setting the state of password protection.

Subject: [*] Slime Invaders 2.0
This is a new version of Slime Invaders, a shoot-em-up arcade game for
the Mac. It is Space Invaders-style, with a gun at the bottom, and various
enemies attacking from above. You move your gun sideways and shoot down
nasties as fast as you can while avoiding to get hit. Complete with a modest
assortment of silly enemies - as there should be in a game like this.
The game should work on all Macs. Several options are included to choose
between compatibility and speed, most notably the choice between Quickdraw
and direct-to-screen drawing. Macs slower than IIsi should use the latter
if possible.
Now in COLOR when available (but don't worry, it still runs on my old SE),
and with the SLIMY COD IN A TOASTER! (Do I hear a "huh"?)
Free for personal use. Consider paying the $15 for my shareware pack
(7 games including Bachman, MacSokoban etc) if you think it's fun.

SMARTSAVER 1.9.1
=================
This binhex package contains:
1. SmartSaver 1.9.1 - the program
2. SmartManual - the manual file in MSWord 5.0 format
3. About SmartSaver 1.9.1 - a short description of SmartSaver
DESCRIPTION
============
SmartSaver helps you to backup changed and added files in your filesystem.
It lets you select a folder or disk to be the source location,
and an other folder or disk to be the destination location.
After giving the [Save smart] menu command, SmartSaver starts to trace
the source and destination location, and copies all files from the source
that are new or have been modified, to the destinationfolder.
There are several features available. Some of the most important ones are:
* File Relocation (automatic relocation of files on the destination
volume depending on a letter code at the start of the file name).
* File Compression (Automatic compression before transfer to
destination using DiskDoubler).
* Detection of moved files (Moved files are automatically moved on the
destination too, without re-copying them)
* Quit dialog (Allows you to let SmartSaver save your work before
shutting down your mac unattendedly).
* Full drag&drop system 7 support.
* Network services like messages and remote control,
for example to shut down an other mac.
* File selection by label and substring in the filename.
* Trace and Cleanup commands to detect and trash double data on you
volumes.
* And many more.

Subject: [*] Sprite Animation Toolkit (programmer's library)
Sprite Animation Toolkit (SAT)
=============================
Version 2.0
SAT is a library for programmers who want to make arcade games or other
programs involving animation. It is distributed as a compiled library,
together with numerous example programs.
Cost:
====
SAT is Copyright (C) Ingemar Ragnemalm 1992-1993, all rights reserved.
SAT is free of charge for making freeware/shareware programs. I only
demand a free copy of games/programs produced with it. For further
details, see the documentation.
(Actually, SAT is also sort of "jobware" - I hope it will make some
employer impressed enough to hire me.)
Noteable features:
================
- Direct-to-screen animation in B/W, 4-bit color and 8-bit color, written
in optimized assembly language OR safe QuickDraw-based graphics in any
screen depth.
- Compatible with system 6 and 7.
- Compatible with all Macs (see below).
- Easy to program, using callback routines to give a programming interface
similar to object oriented programming, but avoiding the overhead of OO.
- Designed for making games that supports several screen depths.
- Can re-configure itself after screen depth changes.
- Switches between color and b/w graphics with minimal programming effort.
- Includes utilities for menu bar hiding, setting mouse position, asynchronous
sound etc.
- Six demo programs included with source code, ranging from a trivial
animation (less than two pages of source code) to the complete arcade
game HeartQuest (53 k of source code), complete with high scores, menu
and window handling etc.
- Developed by an experienced shareware game programmer. The library has
already been used to make three arcade games that have been released (Slime
Invaders, Bachman, HeartQuest), and more are coming.
- Thoroughly tested by several (programming) beta testers.
System requirement:
===================
Compiler: Think Pascal or Think C (version 4 and 5 tested, respectively).
(Most
demos are in Pascal, but any skilled C programmer should have little problem
convering them to C. Three demos are included in C versions so far.)
System: A color capable Mac is recommended but not required. (It's hard to
produce the color icons on a B/W Mac.)
Notes on compatibility:
====================
Of course there is no way to guarantee that it will work on all
configurations,
and I expect problems with certain odd kinds of video boards. It is, however,
tested on a wide range of Macs: by myself on Plus/6.0.7, SE/6.0.7, LC/6.0.7,
IIsi/6.0.7, LC/7.0, IIfx/7.1, PB170/7.1, PB180/7.1, Quadra 950/7.1, and on
many
other systems by the beta testers.
*If* a demo program refuses to run on your Mac, try giving it more memory.
(Usually, the demos will quit gracefully when out of memory, reporting the
problem.) The memory demand is proportional to your screen depth, so if you
run in 16 or 32 bits, you *will* run out of memory with the default settings.

used by itself or with other fonts that are already installed.
Vtopia(^tm) comes in four styles -- Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold
Italic -- and is based on Adobe Systems' Utopia(^tm) font, designed
by Robert Slimbach and available from Adobe Systems and in the Free
Software Foundation's GNU distribution.
This package also contains the keyboard layout "VN 2", to enable
typing Vietnamese characters into the computer. This keyboard layout
coexists with others on your system.
[An analogous version exists for use with FrameMaker on X-Window.]

Subject: [*] Xante PPDs for LwaserWirter 8.0 (resubmission) w
This is a re-submission of the PPDs for the Xante Accel-a-
Writer printers and upgrade boards. Obviously my first
posting was somehow corrupted.
It's a BinHexed StuffIt archive which, when expanded,
should have the following structure:
Root: Xante Folder (folder)
1st Level ReadMe.1st (teachtext document)
(Xante Folder) Warning (teachtext document)
International users beware! (ttxt doc)
Xante Driver 8.0 modifier (application)
PPDs (folder)
2nd Level
(PPDs Folder) The PPDs for the "normal" print jobs
as well as those for PageMaker 5.0
I only worked with the "A1"-PPD (non-PageMaker
version) so far, and it appears that Xante did a
poor job when they wrote it. I have changed it to
set the default paper size (for use in Europe, for
example) to A4 instead of Letter -> change all
occurences of "Letter" into "A4".
The Paper size definition for A4 is correct, but the
margins are set too narrow, at least for my printer.
I changed all occurences of "imageable area", etc.
to values which produce a 17-unit margin (= 6 mm
or 0.6 cm). 1 "unit" is 1/72 of an inch.
If someone wants it, I can send my "adapted PPD",
but I hesitate to post it now.
Please note that I do not work for Xante and do not have
any connections with them other than being their customer.

Subject: 14.4k Data Modem (TCI) [& Z-Term]
Zterm and my TCI are working fine together, unless you
consider 1600-1800cps transfer rate not good. ;-)
One thing I did do is pick up the patch that is archived
here that speeds up Z-term. It does work! I could not believe the
difference.
As for Prometheus Techs and MacWharehouse Techs the are
only run of the mill. The Prometheus techs said the manual for
MacKnowledge had more info about S-registers. It did not. They
also told me that the command "at&t1" and/or "ats18=003&t8"
would work and should tell you the status of the modem. Both only
return "Error." The Macwharehouse Techs could not even attempt
answering the above two questions.
I have also had problems with the modem. Mostly the MW
shipping department. The first modem was shipped with the incorrect
cable. The second shipment came without a modem. the third shipment
came with the second modem. and the second modem's speaker did not
work (just came un-soldered). It would connect though with the new
cable.
As far as the lights go, I check the i/o light all the time.
If nothing is comming from the modem after the connection, I can at
least tell if the computer to modem connection is good by pressing
Return and seeing the i/o light flash.
Plus the Modem does a loopback test (according to the manual)
when powered on. When the green light stops flashing and stays on the
modem has passed its test.

>says that Z-Term and the modem "don't get along all that well."
I've had no trouble whatsoever using ZTerm 0.9. I first used the
MacKnowledge package that came with the modem to auto-configure an
initialization string, then cut and paste it into ZTerm.
The only trouble I've had recently with the modem, using both ZTerm and
MacLayers, is that it doesn't always dial properly the first time. I use
the software's dial command, it picks up the phone to get a dial tone,
then starts the negotiation process (lots of buzzing) without dialing.
I just invoke the dial command again (no resetting or any other operations)
and it all works fine. I'd like to know why this happens, but it's such a
minor bother that I haven't even attempted to figure it out yet.
BTW, I've found the following works quite nicely: use MacLayers to connect
and do all the interactive stuff you want to do with multiple windows. When
you want to do a file transfer, don't log out of the remote system - just
quit MacLayers (without hanging up, of course) and start ZTerm. I get much
better performance from ZTerm transfers than with MacLayers' "macbput"
command.

[Gordon...I never saw this in the digest, so I'm sending it again.]
Starting on Sunday, October 17th, 1993, I will be hosting a new radio show on
personal computing called Online Tonight. It will be syndicated
internationally
and will be delivered via the ABC Satellite Network. It will be *very*
different from other computer shows...and I hope that you all will join in.
Here's my request: please let me know of any computer oriented charities that
would benefit from having their missions publicized.
Here's why: during the course of the show, there will be numerous commercial
breaks. Each of these breaks is approximately 3 minutes long. In each break
there will be 1-2 minutes of national commercials (commercials *we* have sold
and air from the network origination point), followed immediately by a minute
of *local* commercial time. Now, if the local station does not sell a
particular slot, we can't very well have 60 seconds of dead air, so what we
(and every other network show) do is air a public service announcement (that
would otherwise be covered up by the local station's commercial if sold).
What I'd like to do is not only play PSA's in those slots by the American Red
Cross, the American Cancer Society, etc. but also make sure that if there are
any worthwhile *computer-oriented* causes out there that they get the
exposure,
too.
For example, I've heard of a foundation that takes old computers and
refurbishes them using ***-challenged people for labor and then donates them
to
schools. I've also heard of SeniorNet, a non-profit organization that is
trying
to get senior citizens to be more computer literate.
If you know of any other organizations, hopefully that already have produced
30
or 60 second radio PSA's, that you either E-mail me at OLTDavid on America
Online, or post the info here. We won't be accepting copy for live reads, just
tapes. Format is 7.5 or 15 IPS 1/4 inch reel tape or CD.
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you.

I stand corrected on my previous post. Apple has stopped shipping the LC520
until October 21, when it will be re-released (same name), different
processor.
It will have an 040 processor instead of the 030 (sans FPU though)
Same price, same name.
Better performance.
It appears as though Apple did a short production run on the LC520 and
decided not to produce any more (so as not to piss off customers who purchased
on the day before the new product release)
That's the news as of today. Sorry for my previous post, but it really
isn't a discontinued product. Just think of it as shipping delays that are
being justified by adding a faster processor.

[MODERATORS: I sent this friday, but it hasn't appeared in the last digests]
A few years ago, I got a great deal on an Apple Tape Drive 40. Then
this week the thing is getting fatal hardware errors. (I think it
knows I'm looking at one of those APS DAT drives). So now I have
10 or 12 (300 to 500 MB) of data and backups that I cannot access.
Does anyone know any inexpensive ways to recover this data?
My ideas are:
1) Fix it. Does anyone know if this can be done cheaply?
2) Buy another. But $200+ from one of the used-Mac dealers for
a 'dead' technology seems a waste. Unless there is someone
out there in netland who wants to dump one cheap?
3) Buy a drive that READS DC2000 tapes. As long as retrospect
can convert, it would work. But this could be expensive, too.
4) Rent a DC2000 tape drive for mac. Does anyone know of rental
agencies that could do this, expecially in Chicago?
Any other Ideas?
Thanks,

I posted a message here a few days ago complaining that my brand new US
Robotics "mac & fax Sportster" 14,400 Fax/Data modem was suddenly
disconnecting on my when I was receiving large bunches of text (like
after giving the "ls" command in Sumex's Applications directory). I had
tried using the "&d0" command without success.
The solution to the problem was simpler than I imagined: it involved
moving dip switch #1 from the default UP position to the DOWN position.
In the UP position, it was blocking my ability to use the "&d0" command
effectively. If I understand this correctly, while UP is the right
setting if the modem is used with PCs, DOWN is the right setting
for this dip switch if this modem is being used with Macs. Why US
Robotics did not set the dip switch down when they packaged the modem--
which after all is sold specifically for Macintoshes--beats the heck out
of me....
Anyway, I want to thank the several knowledgable people who replied to my

It depends on what sort of access he wants. My book, The Internet
Starter Kit for Macintosh, is primarily aimed at the individual, not
a company wanting a direct line and all that. For that purpose, I'd
recommend looking at O'Reilly & Associates "Connecting to the Internet"

If all he means is that he wants several people at his company to

If no one has heard anything about an upcoming Laserwriter 8.1 driver, then
people probably should like to know about this little problem: in order to
install the Laserwriter 8.0 driver, you need to set your clock on your Mac to
before Oct 1, 1993 (pretty sure- haven't checked every date). As soon as it
turned October, when I tried to install the driver, halfway through the
installation process, when the program goes to decompress the Laserwriter

Subject: Mac lab management software (Q)
I'm interested in finding out what kind of software is available to help
manage our university's Macintosh lab. I've seen this question before -- has
anyone created a report or FAQ? If not, I will, provided I get enough
information to make a good report.
First-hand info from lab managers is especially appreciated!
Information/features I'm interested in/criteria:
- Local hard drive management -
Security software which will let me keep users from cluttering up a local
hard drive, and keep them from messing up the system folder, yet allows them
to
run (certain) apps, cdevs, and such (which may need to write to the
preferences
folder) without any problems.
- Anti-Virus -
What is considered a good virus prevention/virus cleanup system for a lab?
We currently run Disinfectant 3.2 with the init installed. Should I look at
Gatekeeper? SAM? Others?
- Server management -
What works? Any comments?
- Laser Printer accounting & management -
How can I keep track of who printed how many pages? I know that Appleshare
Print Server 3.0.X can do this, but the server is not accessible to the lab
assistant, and I don't like wasting pages to log every print job. Also, how
can I protect my laserprinter without relying on bridges/routers?
- Anti-Piracy -
Is there any way to ensure that users aren't taking our software home with
them?
- Internet responsibility -
When we get a full-time Internet connection (hopefully soon!), how can I let
users access the Internet from Macs, yet make sure that they're not screwing
around anonymously?

Subject: Think C code and data segment limitations (Q)
Okay, the preface is that I am a very old-fashioned fortran programmer trying
to enter the modern era. I have acquired Symantec C++ and Think C and updated
them to 6.01. The thing that is driving me nuts is:
HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE WITH 32K DATA AND CODE SIZE LIMITS????
The Symantec manuals and their tech support people say that this is,
"A limitation of the Mac operating system." NOT! That was true once, a long,
long time ago. Under MPW I can have code and data segments of any size that I
want. Language Systems Fortran handles this beautifully. I think that even the
Symantec C++ for MPW may allow large code and data segments.
How do all you C programmers get any work done with these limitations? What am
I missing? Do things like the "new" keyword in C++ make my concerns
irrelevant?
But what if you want to make a "new" thing that is bigger than 32K?
Unless I am mistaken, this is a hideous flaw in Think C and C++.
[I just wanted to put in a word of support :) :) I spend my days programming
in FORTRAN (on a big system). Go FORTRAN. ;) -Gordon]

...
This sounds like a problem with the fonts used on the Mac and PC. For
example, the Symbol font that comes from Apple with the Mac and the Symbol
font that comes from Microsoft with Windows are not identical. In a font,
each character has a number associated with it, called the "ASCII character
value" or "decimal value." As a made up example, the Mac symbol font might
have an alpha at value 188, but the Windows symbol font might have a smiley
face at value 188; hence, the characters switch around as you switch
operating systems. I'm not sure how WP fonts work - if you use WP for
Windows, you probably are using the MS Symbol font, but if you are on WP
for DOS, I'm not sure.
In any event, the trick is to acquire fonts that map characters to the same
numbers on both platforms. Microsoft's TrueType font packs for Mac and
Windows do this for all the fonts, including Symbol (though, not
surprisingly, the Symbol font has no Apple!). I wouldn't be at all
surprised if other font vendors offer similar solutions. There might even
be a freeware/shareware font, though I've never run into one.
Hope this helps,
Tonya

Subject: WordPerfect 3.0
WPMac 3.0 is supposed to be released today, 10/5 (in the US, anyway). While I
don't have my copy in my hot little hands yet, I expect that it will arrive
before the end of the week.
New features: Tables, with math (or maybe more correctly, arithmetic); button
bar interface, stock or build your own; Grammatik 5 built in instead of
add-on;
equation editor; help system much expanded (though segmented, and in some
cases harder to use IMO); faster scrolling, especially for huge files; loads
much faster, too (unless you're running SAM 3.5); a significantly improved
implementation of styles (though no character styles yet, at least applying
a style won't bulldoze over manual font changes inside a paragraph); and many
other changes that are less important to me, so I can't remember them...
Prices: priced to kill. Upgrades for current users (any version, I think, but
not sure) $59; competitive upgrade for current users of other word processors
costing more than $395 list price -- $79; and if you are a current WPMac user
and really strapped for cash, there is a disk only upgrade for $25. I suspect
there is a shipping charge added to each shipment.
Regarding manuals, I should comment that a book from Que with my name on it is
supposedly soon to be released. My wife and I wrote the first edition, but did
not contribute to the revision. I thought WP Corp did a good job with the 2.x
manuals, and an even better job on the 3.0 manuals (if the portions I've seen
are indicative of overall quality). If you want a comparison of the 3.0
manuals and "our" book on 3.0, send me a note in 3 weeks. (The first edition
of the Que book was on version 2.1, not 1.x).

WP 3.0 was scheduled to be released on the 5th, but is now put off until
the end of the month. It sports multiple button bars (similar to MS Word
5.x's tool bar) including a graphics bar and equation bar. It now comes
with a built-in equation editor (the PC version has had an equation editor
for a long time). Much-improved table handling (it's about time). AOCE and
WorldScript (I/II) compatibility (I'll get a copy just for this capability
-- Word 6.0 won't be WorldScript-friendly as far as I know). Drag-and-drop
text/graphics editing. And a number of other new features. You can obtain a
demo copy free of charge directly from WordPerfect.
